What is thrift drug?

Thrift Drug is a defunct pharmacy chain that was founded in 1936 and was based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The chain initially operated under the name “Thrift Drug Stores” and had more than 500 locations in the northeastern United States at its peak.

In 1997, Thrift Drug was acquired by the drugstore chain, Eckerd Corporation. Over time, the Thrift Drug name was phased out and converted to Eckerd stores.

Thrift Drug was known for its low prices and was popular among customers who were looking for affordable prescriptions and health care products. Many older adults also had fond memories of shopping at Thrift Drug, as it was a staple of the retail landscape in many northeastern cities.
